Outside the Lines: A Blind Contour Protrait

Outside the Lines: A Blind Contour Protrait, Fine Art & Illustration
Outside the Lines: A Blind Contour Protrait
A one-hour blind modeling study made in the Advanced Figure Drawing class. The primary outline captures the essence through a 100% blind contour technique using a charcoal pencil. Subsequent details are made using a charcoal stick. This second step uses a partially blind approach. Each stroke is executed without direct visual reference to the paper, solely connected to the model. Periodic check-ins maintain alignment with the subject, resulting in a unique perspective that offers a fresh, sensitively crafted portrayal. This unconventional method yields a lifelike quality, surpassing the confines of conventional proportion-based approaches.

Artist Statement
Though dabbling in art since I could hold a pencil, at age 28 I decided to get a breadth of formal training here at SLCC. I've found that I love bringing stories to life through graphic design, digital illustration, and drawing. With a deep appreciation for the world's beauty, my work is a blend of creativity and the technical aspects of design. I enjoy crafting visually engaging pieces that communicate emotions, movement, and ideas effectively. In illustration, I focus on capturing humanness and weaving narratives. Drawing has served as my foundation, helping me convey details through simple yet impactful strokes. Whether using the pen tool on illustrator or getting covered head-to-toe in charcoal, I'm committed to constantly learning and improving.
