Marilyn in Monochrome

Marilyn in Monochrome, Fine Art & Illustration
Marilyn in Monochrome
Medium: Charcoal and Pencil on Paper
Inspiration: The captivating femininity of Marilyn Monroe has always fascinated me. In this pencil sketch, I wanted to capture the contrast between her public brilliance and private vulnerability and sadness, hence the subtle divide on her face.
Process: Through careful shading, I worked to convey the softness of her hair and the sparkle in her eyes, striving to bring forth a realism that pays tribute to her timeless beauty. The choice of black and white echoes the classic era of films Marilyn starred in. I used charcoal to create a dark background to contrast the light of her profile.

Artist Statement
Growing up in China, where the focus was strictly on agriculture and manual labor, my passion for art was always looked down upon. My parents saw drawing as a waste of time, almost immoral, and every attempt I made at sketching was met with strong disapproval. Despite this, the urge to create never left me. It's been a little over a year since I've truly started to explore my passion for art, giving myself the permission I was never granted as a child. I've thrown myself into experimenting with different mediums and colors, finding joy in the diversity and challenge they bring. I'm particularly drawn to capturing the human form, intrigued by the richly varied and beautiful physiques and facial expressions that make each person unique. My journey into the art world might have started later than most, but I'm excited to see where this path takes me.
